West Virginia is one of the best places in the country to ride an ATV or side by side. The mountains, forests, and hundreds of miles of trail systems attract riders from across the United States. For beginners the first trip can feel intimidating. With the right preparation you can have a safe and unforgettable experience on the trails.

This guide explains what first time riders need to know before riding in West Virginia.

Understanding the Hatfield McCoy Trail System

The Hatfield McCoy Trails are the largest managed off road trail network in the eastern United States. The system spans multiple counties in southern West Virginia and includes hundreds of miles of marked trails.

Trail Basics

Each system offers a different riding experience. Some trails are wide and beginner friendly. Others include steep climbs, rocks, and tight mountain switchbacks.

Like a vehicle, stay to the right on trails to avoid oncoming traffic. Signal how many riders you have behind you and understand their hand signals. hold up 5 fingers if you have 5 or more machines behind you, 4 if you have 4 and so on. The last person in your group should hold up a fist to let oncoming riders know there is no one else in your group behind you.

Trail Ratings

  • Green trails are easiest and best for beginners.
  • Blue trails are moderate.
  • Black trails are more difficult and better suited for experienced riders.
  • Black/red trails are the most difficult, highly experienced riders, winching often needed.
  • Orange trails are single track – (Dirtbike use only)

Beginners should start on green trails and slowly work their way up as their confidence grows.

Traditional ATV

A traditional ATV is straddled like a motorcycle. These machines are smaller and maneuverable and work well on narrow trails.

A great example is the Yamaha Kodiak 450 EPS. It delivers excellent traction and reliability while keeping the riding experience simple.

Side by Side

Side by sides are also known as UTVs or SXS machines. They have a steering wheel, seats, and seat belts. Many beginners find them easier to operate because they feel more like driving a vehicle.

We offer Yamaha Wolverine RMAX side by sides in both two seat and four seat configurations. These machines are extremely capable and comfortable on the Hatfield McCoy trails.

GPS Navigation on Our RMAX Rentals.

All Eagle ATV Yamaha RMAX rental machines include GPS units with pre planned trail routes. This makes navigating the Hatfield McCoy trail systems simple even for first time riders.

The GPS routes guide riders through the Pocahontas, Indian Ridge, Pinnacle Creek, and Warrior systems so you can explore confidently without worrying about getting lost.
